How to cancel, pause, or export your Campaign Monitor account
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · Campaign Monitor Reviews · Updated October 4, 2026 · Steps from Campaign Monitor's help center
Cancelling Campaign Monitor: the short answer
Export your lists first. If you might send again, switch to pay per campaign billing, which costs nothing until you send. If you're done for good, close the account from Account Settings. Customers on a contract go through their account manager.
Every step below comes from Campaign Monitor's own help articles, checked 2026-10-04. Menu names can change, so check the linked article if a button has moved.
Step 1: Export your subscriber lists
Do this before anything else. Once an account is closed you can't log in to download your lists. Each list exports as its own file.
- Click Lists & subscribers and select a list.
- Open the overflow menu (three dots) at the top right and choose Export list.
- Pick which subscribers to include, for example Active Subscribers only or All Subscribers.
- Choose CSV or tab delimited, select the fields you want, and click Export subscribers.

Step 2: Decide whether to pause, downgrade, or close
Pause: switch to pay per campaign billing
Pay per campaign billing has no up-front fees and no ongoing costs. You pay only when you send email, so it works as a pause for a newsletter that runs a few times a year. Journeys and transactional email need a monthly plan, so automations stop while you're on it.
- Click your profile image at the top right and select Billing.
- If you're on a monthly plan, click View or change your plan.
- On the Choose a plan page, scroll down and click Try paying per campaign.

Downgrade: move to a smaller monthly plan
If the bill is the issue but you still send every month, Campaign Monitor's pricing page says you can switch between the monthly Lite, Essentials, and Premier plans. Lite starts at $13 a month for 500 contacts and keeps automated emails, within its sending limit. Plan changes start from the same Billing page. See current plan prices.
Close: cancel the account for good
- Click your profile image at the top right, then select Account Settings.
- Click the Close account link in the Account details section.
- Select a reason, then click Permanently close my account.
Closing cancels any scheduled campaigns, stops further automated billing, and turns off access for every user on the account. Links and images in campaigns you already sent keep working, so archived newsletters stay readable. Customers on a contract can't close the account this way; they contact their account manager.

If you keep a quiet account open
Campaign Monitor's Terms of Use (section 12.B) let it remove an account that hasn't sent email for more than one year, along with its data. If you pause on pay per campaign billing, send something at least once a year and keep a recent export of your lists.
Leaving for a feature, or for the price?
If you're switching because you need deeper automation, ecommerce flows, or a free plan, our Campaign Monitor alternatives page matches each reason to the tool that handles it. If the price is the reason, a smaller plan or pay per campaign billing may cost less than moving your lists and templates somewhere new.
Cancelling Campaign Monitor FAQ
How do I cancel Campaign Monitor?+
Self-service customers can close the account themselves: click your profile image, choose Account Settings, click Close account in the Account details section, pick a reason, and confirm with Permanently close my account. Customers on a contract contact their account manager instead.
Can I pause Campaign Monitor instead of cancelling?+
Yes. Switch to pay per campaign billing, which has no up-front fees and no ongoing costs; you pay only when you send. Journeys and transactional email need a monthly plan, so those stop while you're on it.
What happens to my data when I close the account?+
Closing cancels scheduled campaigns, stops automated billing, and turns off access for every user. Links and images in campaigns you already sent keep working. Export each subscriber list first, because you won't be able to log in afterward.
Can I keep an account open that I rarely use?+
Yes, on pay per campaign billing. Keep in mind that the Terms of Use allow Campaign Monitor to remove an account that hasn't sent email for more than one year, so send occasionally and keep an export of your lists.
Does Campaign Monitor give refunds when I cancel?+
Its help article on closing an account doesn't cover refunds. Ask support before you close if you expect one, since you lose access to the account when it closes.
